Standardize your apiary records. Save time. Track hive health with data you can actually use.
Hive inspections are the backbone of successful beekeeping, but taking consistent, useful notes in the field is easier said than done. Scraps of paper, forgotten dates, and inconsistent data make it hard to spot trends or plan interventions. This project offers a practical way to bring your inspection records into the digital age—without a steep learning curve or expensive hardware.
A free PDF checklist to get started
Enter your email below to receive a downloadable Hive Inspection Checklist PDF. It’s a ready-to-print or -fill template designed to prompt the key observations every inspection should capture: queen activity, brood pattern, stores, disease signs, and weather conditions.
When you sign up, you’ll also be added to the early-access list for the full automation script. No spam. Just notifications when the script is ready and update notes.
What the checklist covers
- Date & time – standardized formatting for trend analysis
- Hive location & ID – keep multiple yards straight
- Colony strength – brood area, adult bee count, food stores
- Queen health – sighting, marking status, laying pattern
- Disease & pest checks – varroa drops, sign symptoms
- Weather & forage notes – context for colony behavior
- Action items – follow-up tasks, treatment windows
The automation script (what you’re signing up for)
After the validation period, early-access subscribers will receive a Python 3 script that:
- Reads your completed checklists and logs each inspection to a local CSV/Excel file
- Calculates simple metrics: brood area growth, store trends, inspection frequency
- Exports a ready-to-share report for your own records or to show a mentor/partner
- Runs offline—no cloud dependency, no subscription required
- Includes seasonal template packs for spring, summer, autumn, and winter inspections
- Is compatible with data from common hive-monitoring sensors (temperature, weight) via CSV import
The script is designed for hobbyist and small-scale beekeepers who want better records without buying a commercial monitoring system. It’s open to customization, and updates will be released monthly for six months covering bug fixes, new template features, and sensor compatibility improvements.
Who this is for
- Keepers with 5 or more hives who want to move beyond scattered notes
- Hobbyists comfortable running a Python script locally or with basic tech support
- Beekeepers who’ve considered digital records but found existing tools too expensive or restrictive
- Anyone who values structured, seasonal inspection data but doesn’t want a monthly fee
Who it’s not for
- Keepers looking for a fully automated, sensor-driven hive management platform (this script outputs data; it doesn’t stream live sensor feeds)
- Those who prefer closed, proprietary apps with mandatory subscriptions
Roadmap & support (honest timeline)
- Week 1–2: Script logic finalized, PDF checklist dispatched to sign‑ups
- Month 1: First release to early-access users; bug fixes based on feedback
- Months 2–3: Seasonal template packs added; sensor-import improvements
- Months 4–6: Minor feature tweaks, compatibility updates with common sensor datasets
- Ongoing: Email support with a 48‑hour response time for technical questions or script customization help
